Flowing Tree Yoga
What is Yoga Therapy?
Yoga therapy is a specialty within the yoga tradition that empowers you to progress toward improved holistic health through the practice of yoga. Your yoga therapist considers all aspects of your well-being to design specific yoga practices that support your wellness objectives. She utilizes a whole-body approach to assess the needs of your physiological experience as well as your breath, emotions, thought patterns and connection to spirit.
How is it different than a yoga class?
Yoga is an embodied practice of our whole selves and yoga therapy is a specialty within that practice. Yoga therapy is the specific application of yogic tools to address an individual’s physical, mental and emotional needs. Private yoga therapy includes an extensive intake process from health history to structural assessment. Six initial sessions are focused on establishing your personal needs, goals, and modifications.
Flowing Tree classes and groups are also offered from a therapeutic, trauma-informed framework, integrating similar themes of acceptance, embodiment, and integration among the presence of others.
Is a yoga therapist different than a yoga teacher?
While many yoga therapists are also yoga teachers, yoga therapists have extensive additional training in how to customize yoga practices to meet individual needs. A certified yoga therapist (C-IAYT) has attended an accredited yoga therapy school, which requires a minimum of two years of training in specific yoga therapy techniques while working with groups and private clients. It is also expected they attend continuing education to enhance their learning. Your yoga therapist is uniquely qualified to help you connect with your body’s experiences in relationship to your condition and provide you specific tools to help manage your symptoms.
Can yoga therapy help me?
Yoga therapy is individual to everyone and requires intentional effort. Individual sessions and group classes are designed to give you tools you can use at home, at work and in your home practice. There is evidence that when consistently practiced, yoga therapy can have significant effects on an increased sense of well-being including improved mood, decreased stress and chronic pain..
